Carol Elizabeth Marshall - Artist, Poet, Teacher

My artistic process has been honed over many years, and it doesn't typically begin with a specific intention. Instead, I prefer to observe, listen, and contemplate where a line might lead me. I find joy in the freedom of loose line drawing, often without looking at my paper, but rather focusing on the forms that inspire me, particularly in nature. Negative space fascinates me, and it plays a significant role in my work.

I find inspiration in verse, music, and the natural world, and I allow my eyes to guide me towards the substrate when they are sparked with excitement. I have a deep appreciation for the forms found in trees and flowers, understanding that these initial marks are just the beginning. As my work evolves, I embrace the transformation of these marks into new forms.

My process always starts with flowing markers, which serve as the foundation for various artistic directions. I may transpose my initial drawings onto canvas or leave them on paper, where I continue to work on layers using collage and mixed media techniques. Starting with watercolor is a preferred method, as I enjoy the fluidity and transparency it brings, knowing that this initial wash will play a role in the final outcome.

By following this process, I embrace spontaneity and allow my intuition to guide me, creating artwork that evolves organically and reflects my deep connection to nature and the emotions evoked by verse and music.
